Our School - Attendance

Education Act 1999

Under the Education Act 1999, parents have a legal responsibility to ensure the regular attendance of their school aged child at a school or in an approved educational program. This includes children enrolled in Kindergarten and Pre-Primary programs.
Section 38 of the Education Act states that a parent who fails to ensure the regular attendance of their compulsory school-aged child, may be liable for a fine up to $1,000.00

 What is Regular Attendance?

During the course of a school year, a student has regular attendance if they are absent for less than 8 days.A student is considered to be AT EDUCATIONAL RISK if he/she misses more than 8 days per year.

Is Regular Attendance Important?

Yes! Research shows that there is a direct link between school attendance and school success. Going to school is a legal requirement.

Every day at school matters

Children need to attend school regularly so they can take advantage of ALL the educational opportunities available. School enables children to build on their knowledge and skills each day, each week and each year. Consistently poor school attendance and lateness to class can affect children’s educational progress. Patterns of punctuality and regular school attendance are developed at an early age. Good attitudes toward attendance that are well established will help prevent problems as children progress to high school; and school helps children build confidence in areas such as communication, teamwork, organization and social skills. Children who miss school may find it difficult to keep up friendships in the class.

Must I notify the School if my child has been away?

Yes! If your child has been absent from school you need to notify the school with an acceptable reason.
If your child misses any days we require verbal or written notification.

  • Verbal -  Call the school and speak with the office staff or the Class Teacher and explain the reason why your child is absent from school and when they are expected to return to school.
  • Written - Write a note and send it to school upon your child’s return. The note should contain the dates of absence and a reasonable explanation.
  • Electronically  - Dowload our skoolbag app and send details from your smartphone.

What happens when your child misses school without a good reason?

The following steps will be taken until the issue is resolved.

  • School will request an explanation
  • School staff will meet with you to discuss ongoing issues and put together an attendance plan
  • If there is no improvement in attendance you may be referred to the Regional Office and in some cases you will be fined.

Does it matter if my child misses a few days each term?

 Yes!
The outcomes for regular non-attendance at school are alarming!
